Doe v. United States - In 2003, Judge Ricardo M. Urbina, United States District Judge for the District of Columbia, awarded negligence victim John Doe (who has asked that his last name not be used) the sum of $20 million in damages, believed to be the largest Federal Tort Claims Act judgment for an individual plaintiff in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area.

Lawson v. United States - In 2006, U.S. District Judge Roger Titus awarded $5,264,000 to Ruth Lawson, who suffered serious and permanent brain damage as the result of a significant delay in the diagnosis and treatment of a skull defect called Chiari I malformation, by doctors at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base.  Click here for an expanded description of the case.  Click here to read the opinion of the court.

Burke v. Goodman and Groover, Christie & Merritt - $5,774,000 award for a 40-year-old woman who suffered a series of small strokes that went undiagnosed until she suffered a major stroke that left her with permanent cognitive deficits, inability to work, and difficulty communicating. The verdict in the Superior Court of Washington, D.C., was against a neurologist and a major group of radiologists.

Cooper v. First Government Mortgage - A $4.5 million jury verdict in federal court in Washington, D.C., for six consumers cheated in home loans by a mortgage lender.

Jackson v. Prince George's County - Verdict of $3.7 million for the wrongful death of Prince Jones Jr., a 25-year-old college student who was shot to death by a Prince George's County, Maryland undercover police officer. The verdict is believed to be the largest involving police "excessive force" allegations in that county.

Palmer v. Fulcher, et al. - Medical malpractice case in Fairfax County Circuit Court resulting in a verdict of $3.7 million, one of the largest malpractice verdicts ever returned in state court in Virginia.

Jacobs v. Washington Gas Light Co., et al. - Wrongful death and personal injury case involving natural gas leak that resulted in explosion of home in 1998. Settlement in 2000. Believed to be largest settlement in Northern Virginia in case involving wrongful death.

Grinder v. CLC Properties, Inc., et al. - Verdict of $2 million in auto negligence case involving deaths of two children and personal injury to mother. At the time, it was reportedly the largest verdict in a child wrongful death case in Northern Virginia.

Taylor v. DeLonghi - Settlement in excess of $5 million for a young boy burned by space heater.

Lethem v. Northwest Airlines - Passenger death at National Airport resulting in settlement in excess of $3 million.

Lawson v. White - This was a drunk driving case tried to a verdict in Prince George's County Circuit Court. A jury verdict, with punitive damages, was returned in the amount of $8.2 million. It was, and may still be, the largest verdict in that county.

Lewis v. United States - Settlement of $3 million in a case on behalf of a brain-damaged child and his mother against Walter Reed Army Hospital.

Wendell v. Huggins - The jury returned a verdict of $750,000 in this drunk driving case. At that time, October 1986, it was the largest personal injury jury verdict in the history of Calvert County, Maryland. It involved a claim of punitive damages where the employer negligently entrusted the vehicle to its driver who it knew or should have known was using intoxicants.

Iannone v. May Department Store - This was a Montgomery County case. The jury returned a verdict of $1.6 million. Medical bills and lost wages totaled only $12,000. The plaintiffs injury involved double vision at distances under 16 feet after an auto accident.

Hauer v. Amtrak - Settlement of $3 million in Maryland federal court in personal injury case arising out of the Amtrak accident north of Baltimore.

Waschitzki v. Vista International - DC federal court jury verdict of $1,975,000, in case involving broken ankle from fall on defective hotel dance floor.

Moy v. Prichep - Verdict of $3.5 million in a case involving the wrongful death of a 22-year-old woman, reported to be the largest award ever returned in Anne Arundel County, Maryland in either a death or malpractice case.

Muenstermann v. United States - Judgment of $5.5 million entered in nonjury malpractice case in federal court in Baltimore, Maryland involving moderate to serious birth injuries sustained due to medical negligence at the time of delivery.

Linsin v. Community Radiology Associates - Verdict of over $2 million entered in favor of patient whose mammogram was misread as normal, resulting in delay of 8 months in diagnosing breast cancer.

Benedi v. McNeil-P.P.C. Inc. - Jury verdict of $8.8 million for liver failure sustained as a result of taking Tylenol. Judgment affirmed on appeal. Verdict was largest that year in Virginia and reportedly largest ever personal injury verdict in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

Davis v. Kaiser - Settlement $1.8 million, birth related injury.

Kneeland v. Maryland Medical Lab - Settlement $1.3 million, cervical cancer misdiagnosis.

Doe v. Roe, M.D. - Settlement $2.5 million, misdiagnosis of immune deficiency.

Goldberg v. Clinic - Settlement of $4.5 million based on administration of incorrect medication prior to aortic valve replacement surgery.

Sanders v. Hospital - Settlement of $2.5 million based on failure to assess for increased intracranial pressure in 5-year-old girl injured in rollover motor vehicle accident.

Vietnam Babylift Case - A $10 million settlement in connection with a Lockheed airplane crash involving Vietnamese orphan children being brought out of Saigon.

Ellis v. United States - A $3.5 million settlement with the federal government on behalf of a baby who suffered neurological injuries at birth at the hospital at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland.

Greisman v. Zygler and Wister - A $2 million verdict in Baltimore City Circuit Court for wrongful death of a middle-aged man from delayed diagnosis of kidney cancer.

Berg v. Footer - Jury verdict for nearly $1.5 million for family of woman whose gynecologist mishandled a D&C procedure, resulting in a fatal delay in discovery of her cervical cancer.
